All You Need to Know About Airoli Katai Tunnel Road

What Is Airoli Katai Tunnel Road?

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has finalised the plan to construct Airoli-Katai Tunnel Road. It is a 1.7km long road connecting Airoli to the Kalyan-Shil corridor via a tunnel cutting through Parsik Hill. The 1.7km Tunnel Road is a part of the 33.8km long road, starting from Airoli to Katai Naka on the Kalyan-Shilphata road. It traverses through mangroves, valleys, flyovers, and railway lines. The six-lane road will significantly cut down the travelling time between Airoli to Shilphata.

Today if you want to reach Shilphata from Airoli or Mumbai, you will need to go all the way around Parsik hill and travel via high traffic areas of Mahape or Mumbra. The travel time can be over an hour during peak traffic hours. The Airoli-Katai tunnel road cuts straight through Parsik hill in a straight line from Airoli allowing you to bypass Mahape and get to Kalyan-Shil road in about 20 minutes.

Current Status of Airoli-Katai Tunnel Road

The complete project is to be developed in 3 phases. The cost of the whole project is estimated to be approximately 950 crores. 

Phase 1 – An elevated road connecting Thane-Belapur road to NH-4 shall be completed by March 2022. The 1.7-km tunnel road cutting through Parsik hill will be completed by March 2023. 

Phase 2 – Elevated road between Mulund-Airoli creek bridge and Thane-Belapur road is likely to be completed by December 2022. 

Phase 3 – This phase is in the tendering stage. It is an elevated road between NH-4 and Katai Naka.

As of January 2023, the elevated road between Airoli and Katai Naka is 88% complete. The twin tunnels are 66% complete.
