All You Need to Know About CST-Panvel Elevated Corridor

Last Updated on, January 4th, 2023

The CST-Panvel rail corridor is a much-needed connectivity boost for people living in Panvel and its neighbouring suburbs. It is an elevated corridor on the harbour line of Mumbai railways, which will supplement the existing Panvel-CST harbour line. The advantage of this new elevated corridor is that it will offer fast connectivity and a comfortable travel experience similar to the metro. You will be able to travel from Panvel to CST in AC trains in 45-50 minutes. As of now, the same route takes 90 minutes.

About the CST-Panvel Elevated Corridor

According to a proposal by Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC), 48.3 km long elevated corridor will connect Panvel to CST with a spur to the Navi Mumbai International Airport. It will have 11 stations.

The corridor will begin at Carnac Bunder near CST and travel towards Wadi Bunder. From Wadi Bunder, the line will pass through Dockyard road, the existing CST-Panvel line until Vashi. The line then follows the existing railway line from Belapur and ends at Panvel. The CST-Mankhurd and Vashi-Belapur sections of the corridor will be elevated. The corridor will also be connected to the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport. The airport link will begin before the bridge on the Nerul-Uran railway line.

The speed of the train will be 200km per hour and it will cover the entire journey in 50 minutes. The estimated cost of the project is over 14,500 crores. Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) and the Government of Maharashtra will share the cost.

Benefits of the CST Panvel Elevated Rail Corridor

The Panvel-CST elevated rail corridor will play a pivotal role in improving connectivity. A journey from Panvel to CST on the existing harbour lines takes about 90 minutes. Once this elevated corridor is operational, the same commute will be possible in approximately half the time. This will provide massive relief to Panvel residents who commute to work daily to CST, South Mumbai and neighbouring areas.

The existing Panvel-CST line has 15 services during peak hours. Hence, sometimes it leads to overcrowding. The new elevated corridor will have 25 services during the peak hour. Moreover, it will include a link to the upcoming International Airport and Lokmanya Tilak Terminus. This project will provide best-in-class rail connectivity to Panvel and its surrounding suburbs.

Current Status

In 2020, MRVC came up with a proposal to introduce magnetic levitation or the Maglev technology on the CST-Panvel elevated corridor. This technology eliminates the need for wheels and overhead wires. It uses two sets of magnets to make the train levitate over the rails and propel it ahead. This technology may be established in a public-private partnership (PPP) model.

The private partnership will cover the cost of construction, operation and running, and the government will cover the bill for land acquisition, which will be 50:50 cost-sharing between the state government and railway ministry.

Impact on Real Estate

Panvel is a booming real estate market in Navi Mumbai. Some of the renowned infrastructure projects like Navi Mumbai Airport, MTHL, and Navi Mumbai Metro; all these projects are being developed around Panvel. Add to the list, CST-Panvel elevated corridor. All these projects will offer convenience to all sections of society.
