Navi Mumbai Metro – Everything you need to know

4 new metro lines have been finalised by CIDCO under Navi Mumbai Metro Corridor 1. This line will connect Belapur to Navi Mumbai airport via Taloja & Khandeshwar. Apart from this, three more metro corridors are in plan for Navi Mumbai. Here’s everything you need to know about the Navi Mumbai metro – which places it will connect, what the status is and when it’s expected to be completed.

The need

All metro cities of similar size across the globe has a fully functional rapid transit system which helps its resident commute daily without any kinks or glitches

The concept of Metro Rail or a rapid transit system is not new. The first to start with it was London in 1863. By world war I, most of the European cities as well as America were using some form of rapid transit system including the likes of Athens, New York, Paris, Hamburg, Boston & many more. The first to start the same in India, was Kolkata. The Kolkata Metro has been functional since 1984. After the success of the Delhi Metro Rail, Mumbai moved quickly to start line 1 between Ghatkopar & Versova. The rapid growth of Navi Mumbai over the past decade, has made a separate Metro ecosystem imperative in Mumbai’s satellite city.

Navi Mumbai Metro – How it began

CIDCO in consultation with DMRC finalised the details for Navi Mumbai Metro corridor 1 in 2010 after a feasibility study. Corridor 1 is set to run from Belapur to Khandeshwar with a last leg link from Khandeshwar to the upcoming Navi Mumbai airport. This is 23.4km line is to be developed in 3 phases.

Phase I – Belapur-to-Pendhar traversing having 11 stations across 11.1 km

Phase II – MIDC Taloja-to–Khandeshwar (extension to Airport proposed) having 8 stations across 10.3km

Phase III – a 2 km Interlink between Pendhar & MIDC

The story today

The foundation stone for the project was laid by Chief Minister, Mr Prithviraj Chavan in 2011 & the work commenced soon after that. However the project ran into various delays due to change in Govt, contractor issues & agitation by people in the affected area against land acquisition by CIDCO.

However, the first phase of Line 1 of Navi Mumbai Metro connecting Belapur to Pendhar is progressing rapidly & is set to start operations by end of 2020.

Chief Minister, Mr Devendra Fadnavis flagged off a test run of this phase in Sep 2019 – an event which was received very well by the locals in the area who have been waiting for the line to open for the past few years. 90% work on most of the stations on this route is complete & the test runs on different parts of the route are to continue through the coming months.

Apart from Corridor 1, 3 other corridors have been proposed in the detailed project report (DPR) by RITES in 2017. These lines are slated to connect Panvel to Mankhurd via the upcoming Navi Mumbai airport and extend corridor 1 to connect up to Dighe via Turbhe. These lines are proposed & no clarity has been provided by CIDCO so far. Hopefully, they will come to light after Corridor 1 becomes functional.

The future is bright

According to a statement by CIDCO officials, the phase 1 of corridor 1 should be ready by August 2020. “Normally, it takes around six months to procure the safety certificate from the railways” said a CIDCO official.

The start of this line will go a long way in reducing the traffic commuting between Belapur & Taloja. It takes almost 45 minutes to reach Belapur from Taloja due to low frequency of trains and traffic snarls on roads.

After Metro trains start, commuters will be able to travel this distance within 18 minutes, leading to a much needed traffic decongestion on the roads.
